SIBLINGS IN NEED
Mrs. Maria Kuzak told us the story of siblings of Jewish origin from the village of Tarnawa, Józef Hehel and his younger sister. The siblings found shelter with Mrs. Maria’s family.
Maria Kuzak lived in Tarnawa during the war. To her parents: Adamczyk Andrzej and Agata, on January 31, 1944, during the funeral of their son, came a Jewish friend, Józef Hehel, with his 11-year-old sister, asking for help. They were half naked. Afterwards, they were dressed and sheltered in the barn. For some time Maria took care of the Jewish girl and they slept together in her aunt’s barn. Mr. and Mrs. Adamczyk’s relative wanted to take the girl in and baptise her. Unfortunately, rumours began to spread that there were Jews at the Adamczyks’ place, so the Jewish girl had to be transferred somewhere immediately. This is how the girl was taken care of by Mr. Grabowski. However, she was careless – when she wandered around the village at night, someone noticed the girl and murdered her. Her brother, on the other hand, was at the Adamczyks’ the entire time. Maria brought him food, and Józef fell in love with her and wanted to marry her. However, this never happened. After the war Hehel went abroad – and soon afterwards he died.
