The highest state distinction awarded for helping Jewish communities during the World War II occupation is the “Righteous Among the Nations” medal awarded by the Yad Vashem Holocaust Remembrance Institute. Among the 26 thousand awarded people, a quarter (more than 6.5 thousand people) are Polish. To further complete this picture, a research led by the ‘Memory and Identity’ John Paul II Institute established by the Lux Veritatis Foundation indicates, that there were many more cases of heroic efforts to rescue Jewish people among the Polish.
