NATIONAL DAY OF REMEMBRANCE OF POLES RESCUING JEWS UNDER GERMAN OCCUPATION
Today, 24 March, we are celebrating National Day of Remembrance of Poles Rescuing Jews under German occupation. This commemorates the anniversary of the murder of the nine-member Ulma family from Markowa by the Germans.
On this occasion, the chapel of remembrance at the Sanctuary of the Virgin Mary, Star of the New Evangelization, and of St John Paul II in Toruń will be the scene of a solemn unveiling of successive memorial plaques bearing the names of 26 Poles murdered for helping Jews during World War II.
The Holy Mass preceding the ceremony will be presided over and a homily will be preached by Bishop Wiesław Śmigiel, Ordinary of the Toruń diocese.
Invited guests will include the Secretary of State at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland Adam Kwiatkowski, Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin, Minister of Education and Science Przemysław Czarnek, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski, Government Plenipotentiary for Polonia and Poles Abroad Jan Dziedziczak, President of the Institute of National Remembrance Jarosław Szarek and the families of the commemorated persons.
