A PAGE FROM THE CALENDAR - FILIPIAK COUPLE

You are here:

In Toruń, at 41 Sienkiewicza Street, opposite the now-defunct Toruń West train station, even before the war there lived the Filipiaks. The peculiar location of their house resulted in the family dealing with a steady stream of travellers. Their house served as an information and help centre for those arriving in the city. This was how they met Mrs Starzyk, a Jewish woman that married a Pole from a nearby village. This was before the war, and both families became fast friends. When Mrs Starzyk was taken to a camp in 1944, the very same day her husband brought their youngest son, Zygmuś, to the Filipiaks, concealing him in a pile of hay on his cart. There, Zygmuś survived until the end of the war, surrounded with love. Mrs Starzyk survived the camp and returned home. The two families maintained close, life-long contact with each other.
