A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - ZYGMUNT KACZMAREK
– Another Christmas is approaching and the war is still on – Helena sighed, looking with worried eyes at her four young children. She was unusually nervous since the morning, although she did not understand why she had such a sudden anxiety. Soon, however, everything would become clear.
On that day, German officers burst into the house. They grabbed her husband, 34-year-old Zygmunt, and led him out into the yard. After a moment, a shot rang out. Helena was as if paralysed. The Pole from Dobryszyce was murdered because he was sheltering two Jews in his outbuildings – Abram Zelkowicz, a merchant, and his 10-year-old son. Jan Malczewski also helped in the rescue operation. He was also shot, as were two Jews who revealed the names of those who had helped them.
