A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - ZOFIA AND JAN KUBICKI
Beginning in October of 1939, the Kubickis lived in a one-room flat in the Warsaw Marymont district at 5 Żukowska Street. Despite the cramped and difficult conditions, they managed to allocate some space behind the wardrobe where they’d hide Jews until the Warsaw Uprising broke out. Sometimes these Jews would stay there for days, sometimes for weeks – until a safer place could be secured for them. A five-year-old Krysia Henryka Heinsdorf, daughter of Milka Heinsdorf, lived with the Kubickis full-time. Jan, being a police officer, had opportunities to take people out of the ghetto, as well as bring food and medicine to those inside. Zofia and Jan were awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” title by the Yad Vashem Institute.
