A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WŁADYSŁAW AND STANISŁAW MICHAŁOWSKI AND HELA TOPOLSKA
Hela Topolska met Hana Żelazo on a train, lost, scared, and with nowhere to go. Hana was Jewish and ran as far as she could, just to escape the persecution and death. Hela immediately recognised her predicament and engaged the girl in an animated conversation as if they were friends that had always known each other. They stepped off the train together in Sosnowica, where they went for help to Hela’s sister, Stanisława, and her husband, Władysław. The Michałowskis took the girl in with open arms, gave her shelter, provided her with an ID in the name of Anna Domańska and employed her as their babysitter. Hana survived the occupation and lived to see the liberation.
