A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WLADYSLAW AND GENOWEFA BARAN WITH DAUGHTER LUCYNA LUCIAK NÉE BARAN
“We have 65 hectares of land, somebody has to toil it” – said Władysław to his wife, Genowefa. Just before the war, the couple bought a major part of the former Zamojskis estate in Niedzieliska near Zamość. In 1941, when the repression of the local Jewish community was growing ever more brutal, Władysław and Genowefa employed nearly a hundred Jews to harvest crops on their estate. Thanks to this, many Jewish families from Szczebrzeszyn got a roof over their heads, a hot meal, remuneration, and safety for many a month.
Władysław was active in the Home Army. Because of that, he was arrested by the NKVD on 24 October 1944 and executed three days later.
