A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WALERIA AND STANISŁAW GÓRECKI
It was growing dark. Waleria had been standing in the window for quite some time, worry plainly visible on her face. She could no longer pretend everything was all right. She feared for her husband’s life, as he should have had returned home some time before. The dinner waiting on the table had long gone cold. Earlier that night, as he did every week, Stanisław took his cart, laden with straw which concealed the food Waleria had prepared earlier for the Jews hiding in the Głowaczów woods. Stanisław knew the forester very well and knew when it was possible to go there and hand the food over. That day, however, Górecki was surprised by a roadside inspection by the German Green Police. They found large quantities of food on his cart. The forester, knowing the truth, looked at Stanisław first and then at the policemen, and calmly explained that this was payment in kind for the forest workers. The Germans believed him and Stanisław Górecki avoided certain death. Waleria saw her husband again and, wiping the tears running down her cheeks, threw herself into his arms.
