A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - THE GORZELAK

You are here:

“Marysia, I was just at the Gorzelak’s, who live on Łokietka Street. We can hide in their cellar and wait there until the front passes through Częstochowa”, Adam hurriedly informed his wife. “Good people. Thank God they agreed”, woman breathed a sigh of relief and quickly set about preparing the family to leave. “Irek, Zenia, hurry up! We are going to our neighbours”, Mr and Mrs Lewandowski instructed their son and daughter. In a short time, the whole family of four found themselves in a brick shelter. And they were not alone there. Apart from them, a Jewish family who had escaped from a nearby factory with forced labourers also used the underground hiding place.
A January day in 1945 came to an end. The following morning the news arrived: “the situation is getting stable, streets are relatively calm now, front has rolled over”. The tenants of Mr and Mrs Gorzelak could already leave the cellar. The Jews went in an unknown direction and the Lewandowski returned to their flat.
