A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - TEODORA AND KAZIMIERZ MATYJAS
Kazimierz was still a child when his parents left to work in Belgium. Raised by his grandparents in reverence to patriotism, hard work, and Christianity, he enlisted in the army as soon as he came of age. He was an ardent supporter of Piłsudski. Earlier on, he’d been taught the miller’s trade and went to Opoczno to look for employment. There he began his training period in the “Grobla” mill owned by a local Jew. It was in Opoczno that he met the love of his life, Teodora, and they formed a family together. The births of their two daughters filled the Matyjases’ hearts with boundless love. They cared about their fellow human beings, especially those oppressed and needy. They both helped the mill owner survive and also provided bread for the ghetto. Kazimierz paid for that with a spell in Piotrków jail, but luckily managed to extricate himself from there. This didn’t deter them from helping others. They both assisted victims of persecution until the war ended.
