A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - STELLA AND JOHN NIEZNANSKI
“We couldn’t deny Pola our help, she was my incredible friend’s sister” – Stanisława Nieznańska would say, years later, when reminiscing about the war. The year was 1943 and the Tarnopol ghetto was being liquidated. The 20-year-old Pola Skubicka (née Pims) was desperately looking for shelter for herself and her unborn child. She came to the Nieznański apartment in Lwów in the hope of getting help. Despite the risk (the Germans had searched the neighbouring apartments on a number of occasions), the Nieznańskis took care of the pregnant Pola. The child was born and survived the war, together with its mother. Then they both went to the United States. Stanisława and Jan Nieznański were awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” title for their services in 1993.
