A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - STEFANIA LIPSKA (KALINOWSKA)
Stefania was widowed in early 1943. Soon after she lost her husband, her town – Wilno – was scheduled for a ghetto liquidation.
Early one day, a Jewish acquaintance knocked on her door, holding her eight-month-old son Toluś (Shalom Lewin) in her arms. The women understood each other without speaking: the little Toluś had to be hidden. Despite Stefania’s hardships, the boy had a place in her heart and found her home to be a safe shelter.
After the war, he was found by his biological father, Noah Lewin, and the two of them left first for Israel, and then for the United States.
