A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - STEFAN SZPAK

You are here:

“They won’t see the wood for the trees” – said Stefan Szpak to his wife, Kazimiera, as she, fearing for his life, tried to dissuade him from moving into the Tannenbaums’ flat. It was July of 1941. Germans had already entered Borysław and organised a pogrom of the Jewish populace on the very first day, murdering some 250 Jews on July 2nd and 3rd. This was when Stefan Szpak came up with a bold idea: he moved into the flat of his employer, Tannenbaum, to take care of his family. The flat was located right next to the train station, where the Germans herded Jews into train cars every day. None of the Germans suspected that right under their nose, almost at their fingertips, a Jewish family of four was hiding.
