A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - STANISŁAW AND JERZY GNOIŃSCY
“Although only my father was honoured by name and surname by the Yad Vashem Institute, for our family my mother will remain the memory of nameless Jews and nameless Poles saving a single human existence”, the daughter of Mr and Mrs Gnoiński recalled years later. And she adds: “our family remembers that dad’s acts of everyday occupation heroism were supported by the person of our mother, who was faithful to him and devoted to the case”. In autumn 1939, Max Seifert escaped from Drohobycz to Truskawiec, where he found work with Jerzy Gnoiński. When Germany attacked the Soviet Union in 1941, the Gnoiński moved to Lviv and took Seifert with them. In Lviv, Stanisława and Jerzy hid Max in their flat and later arranged false documents for him, according to which he was Ukrainian. Thanks to help of Mr and Mrs Gnoiński, Max Seifert stayed safely in Lviv for 1.5 years, and later they helped him find work in Finland, where he remained until liberation in 1945.
