A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - MICHAŁ HELLER

You are here:

In July 1939. Karolina and Michał said the sacramental „I do” to each other in a church in Stanisławów. She was a wealthy Jewish woman, he was a Polish airman. When the war broke out, Karolina convinced her husband to move to her sister’s house in Krakow. However, the Germans murdered their hosts and the Hellers began their exile. Michał obtained Polish documents for his wife and also helped some Jewish women he knew. Soon, their son Tadeusz was born. The Germans checked several times whether he was really circumcised. One day, Michał was arrested. His distraught wife wrote a letter to her mother-in-law: ” Come. Michał is seriously ill”. Thanks to her knowledge of German and cleverness, Anna Heller managed to save him. However, deep mental wounds remained. After the war Karolina and her son left for Israel.
