A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - MARIAN WOJCIECH BOMBA
Marian was an activist and patriot since his childhood. During the World War I, he was fighting since 1916 in the Legions. He developed kidney disease in the trenches and was therefore declared a disabled soldier. However, he didn’t lose his spirit or will to fight for freedom. Until 1931, he had been running a restaurant with a snack bar in Zelkowo near Cracow, which was an ideal cover for organising a peasant community. He was in charge of the PPS cells in Płaszów, conducted diversification training, and during the World War II actively participated in activities of the “Żegota” Jewish Aid Council in Cracow. He was organising help for Jews, Poles, Hungarians and Yugoslavs in hiding and prisoners from the Płaszów camp. In May 1943, betrayed by Konrad Lubański, alias “King”, he was detained by Gestapo. Severely wounded, he managed to escape. He survived the war.
