A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - MARIAN AND WŁADYSŁAWA SŁONECKI
“Mum, dad, do you remember my friend, Lusia?” – Emilka asked her parents in a hushed voice. “Of course we do, dear” – answered Władysława, Emilka’s mother. “Lusia and her sister Giza are in the attic of our house. They escaped from the ghetto and we’ve got to help them lest they die” – recited Emilka without pausing for breath. “We’ll do everything to save them” – said Marian, Władysława’s husband, as le looked tenderly on his daughter and his wife. The very same day, the Słoneckis move the Gross sisters to an outbuilding near their house, which was warmer and more sanitary than the attic. Six moths later, Lusia used Emilka Słonecka’s documents to go to work in Germany, while Giza joined the underground. After the girls’ departure, the Słoneckis hid their aunt, Regina Laufer, until the war ended.
