A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - JANINA KUTKOWSKA
“We’re losing a wonderful, noble human being” – was the priest’s eulogy for Janina Kutkowska, when she died, aged 92, in her beloved Łowicz. She was a distinguished citizen, an eminent teacher, and – above all – a good person. Janina married a Łowicz town hall civil servant, Adolf Kutkowski, before the war. In 1941, Adolf was murdered by the Germans in Palmiry. Devastated and broken-hearted, she went to live with her sister, Helena Kolasińska, at 13 Tkaczew Street. “If I can save but one human life, I shall do everything in my power to achieve that” – Janina said to her sister when saw a Jewish woman, Mrs Goldman, in their house. They took care of her together for over a year, and then managed to put her on the list of people assigned to work in Germany. Mrs Goldman stayed in Germany until the liberation; she survived and emigrated to France. She corresponded until her dying day with the sisters that had saved her life.
