Little Mikey rushed into the house terrified. – Mummy, the Germans are coming, they are sweeping through the whole of Zachwiejów, every corner. They are taking the young ones to work,’ he wheezed. Maria turned pale. The Jewish brothers, Jeremiasz and Icek Kirschenbaum, were hiding in the barn. Poles had been helping them for a long time. And not only them. It was too late to escape. The woman summoned her three children and went out into the courtyard. She was in advanced pregnancy. The Germans took one look at the bunch of toddlers, the pregnant Polish woman and… they made their way over.
