A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - IRENA GUT-OPDYKE
Irena saw how an SS man in the Radom ghetto snatched an infant from its mother’s arms, tossed it up and shot it like a duck. Such images, combined with the young nurse’s strength of spirit, pushed her to heroic actions. When she was a housekeeper in the villa of a German major, she placed a group of Jews she had earlier led out of the liquidated ghetto in the ventilation shaft of his bathroom. It was impossible to count the number of people she helped at the risk of certain death.
