A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - HENRYKA OBERMILLER
These were beautiful holidays. The summer of 1939 held an extraordinary charm. Guta Frydman, née Wiener, who had spent years with her husband in London, came to the Warsaw house of her father for holidays, together with her son, Michał, not yet two-years-old. She didn’t know that she was never to see her husband again. She didn’t manage to leave before the war broke out on September 1st. When the Warsaw ghetto was created, Guta, her father, and little son found themselves within its walls. Henryka knew Guta, as their husbands had conducted some business together before the war. “I’ll say that he is my son. I’ll save him, Guta. I promise you” – she assured the devastated mother. That’s exactly what she did. Henryka led Michałek out through the court building that allowed entry from both the Aryan and ghetto side. Guta and her father died in the ghetto. After the war, Henryka located Michałek’s father in England, and the boy managed to return home.
