A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - HELEN AND JULIAN GRZESIOWSKI
Every year, there were beautifully trimmed acacia trees in front of the “Julian Grzesiowski: Fruit & Sugars” store at Rynek 2 in Zaleszczyki. The sun was shining, the air was warm, and the bench near the store had a charming prospect of the nearby park. Two Jews sat on this bench. The tired and hungry men could, at least for a moment, forget the wartime difficulties and persecution. Unfortunately, this moment was not to last long. “Where did you get this food” – inquired a German officer who appeared out of nowhere. “From the Grzesiowskis” – replied the scared men. The German quickly hauled Julian out of his shop and ordered him to dig a grave for himself, while screaming at him and hitting him on the head with the butt of his rifle. The Jews managed to abscond then. As there were no witnesses to this event, the German finally decided to let Julian live.
