A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - EMILIA AND FELIKS URZYKOWSKI
“We shall build two hideouts, one under the floor in the parlour and the other under the floor in the kitchen” – said Feliks to his son Janusz. Feliks was paralysed and had been using a wheelchair for a long time. He knew discomfort and inconvenience, and perfectly understood the plight of the Jews, so he didn’t hesitate long when his son asked him for help for Jewish doctors. In early 1943, Noemi Makower and her husband, Henryk Makower, escaped from the Warsaw ghetto. On January 28th, Janusz Urzykowski drove them outside the city, to his family home in Miłosna. For 18 months, the whole family took care of the Makowers, thanks to which they managed to survive until liberation. After the war, the Jewish doctor couple lived in Wrocław. They kept close relations with the Urzykowskis.
