A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - CZESŁAW WRÓBLEWSKI
“You didn’t give him life, so you won’t take it away from him either” – said Czesław Wróblewski to a man leading a crying Jewish boy of five to a German police post. The boy’s cries were heart-rending. Czesław freed the child from the shmaltsovnik’s grasp and led it to the Szemborskis’ house. Wróblewski was hiding in the woods at the time, as he’d escaped from Treblinka a couple of weeks earlier and was himself a fugitive. He couldn’t take care of the young one himself, but did everything to provide the child with a safe shelter.
