A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - CHRISTINE AND CZESLAW CEGLOWSKI
“Can we come with you? We shouldn’t stay here a moment longer!” – thus, with desperation in his voice and knowing looks cast towards Czesław Cegłowski, lamented his neighbour, Mr Kołodziejski, upon seeing Cegłowski getting ready to leave his house.
The bombarded Lublin was a scary place, with the citizens’ fear heightened by repression. The Cegłowskis, who had a house in Radowiec near Konopnica, decided to flee Lublin. They agreed to their neighbours’ plea and took them along. It wasn’t until they arrived at their destination that their companions’ Jewish descent was revealed. This revelation did nothing to change the neighbours’ relationship. The two families supported each other and remained in Radowiec until the war ended.
