A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - CAROLINE AND PETER BOGUSZ
When Samuel Weinrauch’s wife was taken to the Bełżec camp in 1942, he knew he’d share her tragic fate unless he found a suitable hiding place. This was why, a couple of days later, he went to the apartment of Piotr and Karolina Bogusz, whom he’d known from before the occupation. The couple agreed to shelter him under their roof. They prepared a daytime hiding place for him under the floor; on the quieter nights, Weinrauch slept on the sofa. This continued for two years. Samuel survived the occupation, lived through the liberation, and – under an assumed name of Zdzisław Cepak – married his saviour’s sister, Anna. The Boguszes were awarded the “Righteous Among the Nations” title for their selfless assistance.
