A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - AUGUSTYNA FILIŃSKA

You are here:

“Two Michaels dancing, their moves so entrancing…” – the beginning of a Julian Tuwim poem was a sure-fire sign that the little Marysia, daughter of Augustyna Filińska, could expect an evening with a book. This daily ritual introduced tranquillity and happiness into their home, allowing them a short respite from the horrors of war. This reading obligation in the Filińskis apartment, located at 47 Stalowa Street in the Warsaw Praga district, was happily assumed by Zygmunt Zajdler Zborowski, who was hiding there. Thanks to her perfect knowledge of German, Augustyna Filińska on a couple of occasions managed to dissuade the German Green Policemen from searching her flat, thus saving the life of Mr Zborowski.
