A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - ANTONI GRABDA AND WITOLD GRABDA
“I have a saw blade hidden in my shoe” – said Leon Rosenfeld to his cousin, Samuel. They knew that their fate would be sealed unless they attempted to escape from the transport taking them to a camp. They quickly sawed through the train car floorboards and went outside. They got to Raków on foot. While hiding in the woods, they met Witold Grabda. He was moved by their plight and didn’t remain oblivious. He knew that they wouldn’t survive the winter in the woods without help. In just a couple of days, together with his father, Antoni Grabda, he built on their farm a hideout for the two Jews. Between the summer of 1943 and January of 1945, Samuel and Leon Rosenfeld could count on having a roof over their heads as well as on the tender care of the Grabdas. They survived until liberation and went to Israel after the war. They kept in touch with their saviours until the end of their days.
