A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - ALEXANDRA AND JOHN

You are here:

“Lice were the most odious, followed by fleas and huge bedbugs that gave off a sickening odour when crushed. Once the night came, all these parasites would attack with redoubled strength. It was futile trying to fall asleep. The conditions were extremely difficult, but I know now that had it not been for what the Górals did for us, we’d either perish in the Warsaw ghetto or the Treblinka gas chambers. We’re eternally grateful to them” – so says Michał Keningsztejn, who, together with his parents, spent two years in a hiding place under the barn in the farmstead of Jan and Aleksandra Góral. Apart from the Keningsztejns, the Górals saved eight other people.
