A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - AGNIESZKA AND ZYGMUNT GUZOWSKI
“We cannot leave her, she needs help” – said Zygmunt to his wife, Agnieszka. Their two daughters slept in the next room. Agnieszka shivered, fearing for her children, but knew that Ms Sobol’s chances for survival without help were negligible. When she appeared on the Guzowskis’ threshold, exhausted and afraid, she had nothing to lose, as she’d just escaped from the transport taking her to the Majdanek camp. “We will not let you die” – said Agnieszka and they embraced. The three of them knew each other from before the war. The Guzowskis hid Ms Sobol in their flat for two weeks, and then Zygmunt took her under the cover of darkness to Lublin, to a convent that sheltered her after that.
