A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - ZAJĄC FAMILY

You are here:

The division of responsibilities in the family of Marianna and Jan Zając was clear. The daughters Aniela, Katarzyna and Janina took care of the meals, while the sons Bronisław, Adolf and Józef looked after matters of safety. In the barn of their farm in the village of Nawóz, a Jewish family had been hiding since the summer of 1942: Jankiel and Ryfka Pelc with their daughter Rózia and son Szlom. The boys also prepared an additional hiding place for them – in the fields. It came in handy when, in December 1942, the entire village was evicted. – We all wanted to live and this gave us courage, motivated us to be cautious. This desire to live was greater than fear – recalled Józef years later.
