A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - GERTRUDA BABILIŃSKA

You are here:

– Trudy, I am about to die. Please take care of Mick. He only has you now. When this hellish war is over, please take him to the land of Israel, I beg you,” Lidia Stolowicka asked the Pole, sensing that the end was near. Shortly afterwards, she actually died, orphaning the 4-year-old. Gertruda was the only one of the Stolowickis’ servants who did not leave her Jewish employers after the outbreak of war. The boy was circumcised and Gertruda lived in constant fear, but she did not give up. After the war, she fulfilled the last wish of Michaels mother and – not without difficulty – left with the boy for Israel.
