A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - FR. STANISŁAW SKRODZKI
The parish priest, Father Stanisław Skrodzki, was born on 15 January 1893 in the village of Borkowo, near Kolno, in a deeply-religious, large family with patriotic traditions and noble origins, bearing the Ślepowron coat of arms. He was ordained on 22 February 1920 in Łomża. During and after the war, he ministered to many different parishes, including Przytuły (Jedwabne decanate). On 1 July 1941, nine days before the pogrom of the Jedwabne Jews, Father Skrodzki baptised Helena Kuberska, then 15-years-old, a Jewish girl from the vicinity of Jedwabne. He confirmed that with an official entry in the parish records of the Holy Cross Church in Przytuły. “How will I ever repay you, Father?” – asked Hela’s mother. “Simply by surviving” – answered the priest. In order to enhance their safety, he hid the whole Kuber family, fed them in secret, and helped them survive the cruel occupation. They all survived until liberation, and Father Skrodzki administered the sacrament of marriage to Helena Kuberska in the Przytuły parish church.
