During World War II, Jan and Maria Barzał lived in the village of Horodysko (Lubelskie Voivodeship). For 18 months, the couple sheltered two Jewish women, Róża Zarucka and her mother, in their shed.

Jan and Maria Barzał were awarded the title Righteous Among the Nations in 1983.
