A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - NIKANDER PUŁA
Nikander’s only offense was a human heart. Help shown to two people of Jewish origin was the reason for murdering him. Nikander was a 38-year-old military man, a devoted son and a patriot. His parents were proud of his son’s commitment to the fight for independence, and were even more touched by his empathy and impeccable character. They were trembling for him when he was helping Jews, but they knew they couldn’t forbid him anything. That’s the way he was, he couldn’t get past the suffering. On 5 July 1942, Germans arrived in Juliopol, where Nikander lived, and broke into his house. Puła didn’t remain passive, he resisted, but he was alone in the fight. He was murdered. The light of Karolina and Michal Puła’s lives was extinguished forever.
