A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - KAROLINA MARCINIEC AND BARTŁOMIEJ GIELAROWSKI
Karolina Kozak lived in Sokołów right next to the school. She was witnessing almost daily the trucking of Jews and Poles to the school yard. She was secretly watching from behind a curtain in the window the tragic events that unfolded in the school yard, once bustling with life, filled with joy and loud laughter of children. Now, the place has become a symbol of massacre. Ms. Karolina remembers exactly when Karolina Marciniec and her partner Bartłomiej Gierałowski were pushed out of a truck in the summer of 1943. She knew them, knew that they were a couple for years, had farm together and children. What she didn’t know was that they had been hiding Jews in their home for a year. Now, in a hot afternoon, lined up, they all received a round from rifles. Next day, Germans doused their dead bodies with petrol and set them on fire.
