A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - KAROLINA AND MIKOŁAJ KMITA
In July 1942, Zofia Gewircman, who was less than 21 years old, escaped from the ghetto in Kowel. She didn’t know where to go, she didn’t know anyone. It was a beautiful summer and long, warm days were giving a young woman courage, and the nearby orchards with ripening fruits were feeding her. After a few days of wandering through forests and fields, Zosia knocked on the door of Elza Kmita, who lived in the village of Boża Darówka. Elza had a tiny hut with no room, but offered to put Zosia up with her sister-in-law Karolina and her husband Mikołaj. Zosia was hiding with the Kmit for almost two years. For safety’s sake, apart from Elza, no one from the family knew about Miss Gewircman. She happily survived until the liberation, and after the war she left for Israel. The Kmit were awarded the Medal of Righteous Among the Nations by the Yad Vashem Institute for their merits.
