A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - FR. JÓZEF GORAJEK
“I baptise you in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit”, Father Józef Gorajek placed the sign of cross on the head of a seven-year-old boy Eugeniusz, making the boy a Christian. Little Gienek’s mother, Danuta Winnik, after escaping from the Warsaw ghetto, reached Niezabitów with her son. Despite their Aryan appearance, inhabitants of Niezabitów were whispering about their true nationality, but fear affected everyone at the time. Everyone feared for their lives and the lives of their loved ones. However, Father Gorajek’s position and respect of the residents didn’t allow anyone to betray or denounce him. Danuta Winnik and her son Eugeniusz Winnik lived to see the liberation, and after the war they left for the United States. Eugeniusz visited Poland and his saviour after 45 years. At the request of Father Gorajek, Eugeniusz planted a tree in Israel.
