A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - BOLESŁAW MACIEJEWSKI
Regina, Bolesław Maciejewski’s wife, died in the second year of the war. Bolesław was left alone with the children. Dobryszyce, where they lived, was less than 10 kilometres away from Radomsko. As early as in December 1939, Germans established a ghetto there, which Bolesław visited regularly carrying bread for Jews. In the past, Regina had been baking it, but now tender memories, deep longing and a piece of paper testifying to her existence: a kennkarte were all that remained of her. In his bereavement, a grief-stricken Bolesław had forgotten to return it, so when an opportunity arose to save a human life with its help, he didn’t hesitate. He gave the kennkarte to an acquainted Jewish woman, who used it to go to work in Germany and later made her way to France.
