As administrative manager at the Warsaw construction company ” Eng. Piotr Butenko and Co.”, Alfred Engel, among other things, recruited workers. And thanks to this, he saved the lives of many Jews, because he was giving them employment. When, as part of the company’s activities, he was transferred to Tarnopol, he continued to employ Jews there, helped escapees from the ghetto, provided them with hiding places at construction sites, smuggled food, provided material support – all „out of an inner need to preserve human dignity”.
