A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WOJEWÓDZKI FAMILY
The only thing left of Bronisława Wojewódzka’s farmstead was the house – ransacked, with bullet holes reserved for the seven Jews in hiding. The rest of the buildings were burnt down – as an example. The bloody crime occurred at dawn on 23 June 1943. At that time, the entire German gendarmerie from Sokolow Podlaski arrived and organized a demonstrative execution. The surprise was complete. The children, drowsy, were herded out into the yard in their nightgowns. There was no chance of escape. The youngest, Ala Szafirsztejn, was barely 9 years old. The Jews were executed at once, Bronisława was shot after them. Her sons Marian and Józef were taken to the Pawiak prison. They perished in Mauthausen. The village leader left the younger Polish children, Ania, Michałek and Ela, in the care of their oldest sister living in Przywózki.
