A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WŁADYSŁAW SAJKOWSKI
For young Władek, fear did not exist. The people he had been friends with since childhood, and whom the Germans now crowded into the Gostynin ghetto, needed help. They were hungry, deprived of dignity and hope. Władek smuggled flour, bread, milk, potatoes and occasionally honey for them. Then, the news broke: the ghetto was going to be liquidated. The six-member family of Szlom Motyl stood in front of the Poles’ door. The boy grabbed a shovel and dug a cellar for them. – The Germans won’t come anywhere near here, they’re afraid of the dog – smiled Władek, patting his sheepdog.
The Motyls spent a week there – until someone reported that there were Jews in the area. Władek then placed them with his friend, the Kliglich family. Two weeks later, he received a letter from Szlom: „Thank you! We managed to get through to Warsaw”.
