A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - WACŁAW BUDZISZEWSKI
From the Budziszewski barn, the Germans rushed a group of Jews. The landlady, trembling with fear, was holding 3-month-old Kostek in her arms, 12-year-old Stach was crying, and Henryk lowered his head helplessly.
– How long have you kept them here? – asked the interpreter. The two Jewish boys rushed to escape. A futile one. The interpreter repeated the question. Wacław, the 18-year-old son of the Poles, stepped forward from the line.
– Parents knew nothing. I gave these people shelter,” he lied hurriedly. He saved the lives of his family by doing so, although he perished himself – „of the heart” – as stated in the Stutthof camp documentation on 1 April 1943.
