A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - STANISŁAWA DADAS
– People, it’s burning, the train is burning! – witnesses of the explosion shouted. Kazimierz was just coming back from work. And then the round-up started. In Otwock it was quite a common practice. He was sent to the penal camp in Treblinka for a year. Every day at 4am the prisoners were taken to work along the river. When the guard could not see, the Pole dug a hole and hid a message for his wife in it: „Dear wife, bring bread and a bottle of vodka”. The alcohol was to be for the guards – to weaken their vigilance. Stanisława, in an advanced state of pregnancy, followed her husband’s instructions. She organised alcohol and food. She stayed with an elderly lady nearby and, to disguise herself, grazed her geese. There she prepared meals and took them to an agreed place. Both Poles and Jews ate. Everyone was hungry. After a year, Kazimierz returned back home.
