A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - KUR FAMILY

You are here:

Jews who managed to escape the manhunt were sneaking out of the Kur barn in the village of Szwejki. There was only one woman left. – Can I stay with you? – she asked her hosts in an imploring tone. – All right. There are already six of us, but we will manage,” Jan replied. The woman stayed at home every day, but in case of a search, she had a hiding place dug under Jan’s mother’s bed. It came in handy once, but not for long.
On 2.01.1942, blue policemen came to the Kur family. They must have had a detailed report, because they went straight to the room with the hiding place. After a while they took the Jewess and Marianna out of the house and took them to the arrest in Sterdynia. A week later a letter arrived: „Marianna Kur was transported to Siedlce”. And that was all. Most probably they were both shot. Jan remained in hiding for 3 years while his mother took care of the children.
