A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - JÓZEF RABIEGA
„Every Jew is obliged to wear a yellow armband. Failure to do so is punishable by death” – as early as 14 November 1939, Friedrich Übelhör, president of the Kalisz region, proclaimed. This was the beginning of the stigmatization and segregation introduced by the Germans in order to ensure the „purity of the race” and protect it from the „plague spread by Jews”. A year later, the entire Jewish population of Turek and the surrounding area was forced into the ghetto between Szeroka and Wąska Streets. There were attempts to escape aided from outside by Poles. Józef Rabiega, 47, who lived nearby, became involved in this activity quite early. In the summer of 1941, the Germans caught him. Enraged, they beat him so severely that they lost their own strength. He died in agony.
