A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - JANINA AND BRONISŁAW PEŁKA
“Janina, dear, you’re heavily pregnant, this is becoming very dangerous. I fear for you and our unborn children” – said Bronek to his wife. Janina was pregnant with twins. “I cannot stand idly by – when I have a chance to do something to a man in need, I always do it” – answered Janina, stroking her husband’s face. Both were actively helping Jews. They were even called the “Jew guides”. The hid the fugitives from the vicinity of Poraj in their house, tended to them for a couple of days, dyed their hair, provided them with false IDs, and led them to safety. Thanks to their actions, a couple of dozen of Jews managed to escape with their lives. The unrelenting stress and fear in which the Pełkas lived took their toll on Janina, who lost her children in the eight month of her pregnancy.
