A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - IRENA I WŁADYSŁAW SIŁA-NOWICCY
After months of horrible suffering, 16-year-old Basia Nowak was being driven to Majdanek, to be killed. Suddenly someone pushed her out of the crowd and she ran away. At first she stayed with the Michałowskis, although the situation there soon became dangerous. Posters warning against helping Jews hung almost everywhere. And then Władysław Siła-Nowicki came to help. – Basieńka, cheer up, you’re going to live with my wife and daughters. I’m rarely at home, my Irena will need company and help with the little ones,’ he argued. The transfer went quite smoothly. – And from the moment Basia crossed the threshold of our flat, she became part of our family – recalled Irena Siła-Nowicka years later.
