A CARD FROM THE CALENDAR - IRENA AND EDWARD SZYNKOWSKI
“Aunt Jola had long, curly hair. She was a warm, good person that knitted sweaters for us” – that’s how Krystyna Olejnik, née Szynkowska, remembered a Jewish woman that hid in her family home during the German occupation. Krysia was four when her parents took Jola in. They had themselves escaped from Przedmoście to Oleśno early in the war, so they knew and felt keenly the pain brought by isolation, uncertainty, and lack of security. Helping Jola was a natural need for them, a Christian duty. It was only thanks to the Szynkowskis’ full commitment and the goodness of their hearts that Jola managed to survive the war.
